catch a little sleep
on michael’s couch
in the morning she calls me out
a half day’s leave
from the summer job
where she’d teach

have breakfast out
in some cafe
where the conversation strained
here and so soon gone away --
not much to say.

she drops me off
south of town
two miles from where i live now
i turned 21 waiting around

when just then a kid
on his bike
rolls up to my side
