i hear the trumpet and i shiver
your arrival tolls the bell
while i dampen careless fires
with a dry and empty well
looking back on rising water
peering forward and predicting hell
this is the hope of obscured vision
that i've set aside for myself;
a portion of the whole.
you wrote blueprints for a mansion,
towering gold and gilded height,
but i have built only the basement
and i locked myself inside
for fear of the hand that softly coddles us
and is soothing me to sleep
for fear of the breast by which my days are nursed
and my store of breath repletes
for fear of the love by whom love itself
is parting the bars with the keys--
hallelujah? i'm terrified and i'm starving.
"come, o king."
